He worked between China, Taiwan and Hong Kong producing the best films by authors of the caliber of Hou Hsiao-hsien and went through eras that are reflected in his work: the war in Vietnam, the Chiang Ching-kuo era of Taiwan, the reform and the opening up of mainland China, the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the handover of Hong Kong.
